3-07-19 The Story of My Research series – Dr. Alvaro Lau (Peru)

We cordially invite you to the first presentation of
The Story of My Research | Group 1: Latin America

Dr. Alvaro Lau (country of origin: Peru)
WUR Post-Doc researcher at the Department of
Geo-Information Science and Remote Sensing
Area of research: Tropical forest monitoring

In his presentation Alvaro will explain how remote sensing techniques -such as terrestrial laser scanning- are being used for researching trees and areas in forests. These are accurate, non-destructive, and replicable methods.

These techniques are combined with structure modelling to extract tree volume, biomass, growth, species, and to understand certain ecological questions. A robust and rapid assessment of tree characteristics is achieved.

These characteristics will improve current global efforts to measure forest carbon emissions, understand their uncertainties, and provide new insight into tropical forest ecology. In this presentation Alvaro will tell us how his specific area of research provides for a better understanding of ecological challenges in tropical forests.
